Approach from any direction and see Pilot Mountain rising more than 1,400 feet above the rolling countryside of the upper Piedmont plateau. Dedicated as a National Natural Landmark in 1976, this solitary peak is the centerpiece of Pilot Mountain State Park.

Fun, from relaxation to exhilaration, is easy to find here. Treat yourself to a horseback ride through the woods or challenge the river from a raft or canoe. A six-mile woodland corridor joins two sections of the park, each section offering a wealth of opportunities for outdoor fun. The mountain segment, which includes the two pinnacles, contains most of the visitor facilities. The more primitive river section centers around the lazy, meandering Yadkin River.

Activities: Camping (49 campsites for tents or trailers), Canoeing Yadkin River (2 miles with one canoe access site), Educational Programs (held weekly), Fishing (sunfish, crappie and catfish), Picnicking (3 areas, shelter for 35 people), Rock climbing and Rappelling (contact park office about designated areas), Hiking (13 trails) and Horseback Riding (2 trails).

Directions: Pilot Mountain State Park is located in Surry and Yadkin counties, 24 miles north of Winston-Salem and 14 miles south of Mount Airy off Highway 52.

Park Hours: November-February, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.; March-October 8 a.m.-7 p.m.; April, May, September 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and June-August 8 a.m.-9 p.m.

BIRD WATCHING
Pilot Mountain also offers good hawk viewing. A typical fall count is 2,000-4,000 birds. But large kettles occasionally occur. On one day in 1993, 10,800 broadwings passed by. Go to www.hawkcount.orgto see data from Pilot Mountain and other watch sites. (Information recieved from the Winston Salem Journal, September 3, 2008 Article)
