Mount Airy Served as an Inspiration for “Mayberry”

MOUNT AIRY, N.C.--Step back to a simpler time when you visit Mount Airy.

Actor Andy Griffith grew up here, and it’s no coincidence that a stroll down Main Street in the “Friendly City” reminds people of the town of Mayberry on the endearing and enduringly popular ‘60s hit TV series.

Fans of The Andy Griffith Show can visit Floyd’s City Barber Shop, the Old City Jail, Snappy Lunch, the Andy Griffith Playhouse and even Andy’s childhood home. Also while shopping downtown you will want to go by the Mayberry Soda Fountain and Opie's Candy Store. Other attractions include the TV Land Landmark Statue Andy & Opie Going to the Fishing Hole, Wally's Service Station, The Mayberry Courthouse and Squad Car Tours!  Open 7 Days a week is the Andy Griffith Collection which houses the world’s largest collection of Andy Griffith memorabilia, on loan from Andy’s childhood friend Emmett Forrest. www.surryarts.org
